Active Directory planning and deployment

For most IT professionals, deploying Active Directory isn’t something they do every day. In fact, many admins set it up only once every few years — when building a new infrastructure, redesigning an existing domain, or migrating to modern servers. And because of that, each deployment feels like starting from scratch: new versions, changed best practices, forgotten steps, and the constant fear of missing something critical.

That’s why proper planning is absolutely essential. Active Directory sits at the core of your network — it controls authentication, access, and security for everything from user logins to enterprise apps. A single mistake during setup can cause hours of troubleshooting or even compromise your security posture. You make ask, what makes me think that I'm the person skilled enough to support others, write various guides and also be sure the information in these guides is correct and valuable. Well, here is why:

Personally, I’ve had one incredible stroke of luck in my career — followed by about a million misfortunes that came with it. For many years, I worked as an IT instructor delivering courses on basic, advanced, and expert-level Active Directory administration.

The lucky part was that I had the opportunity to install and configure AD hundreds—if not thousands—of times, across different networks and infrastructures. The “million misfortunes” came from the fact that sometimes, participants in my classes made mistakes during the exercises, and I had to quickly identify and fix the problem so we could keep moving forward.

Over time, I’ve encountered almost every imaginable issue and complication — and learned how to identify, isolate, and resolve them efficiently.

Of course, I’d never base my advice solely on classroom theory or sandbox lab environments. Over the past two decades, I’ve also worked hands-on as a freelance administrator and in-house IT professional for a wide range of organizations — from tiny offices with a single dusty domain controller tucked in the office corner, to global corporate networks with hundreds of domain controllers distributed across the world.

I believe I’ve managed to create a clear and practical guide that covers every step you should take during the planning, deployment, initial hardening, and configuration of Active Directory. The entire process is divided into five well-structured chapters, each containing 10 to 20 key points you should think through, design, and prepare before making any final moves.

Each point represents a specific action or task, described in a concise and straightforward way — and supplemented with real examples and command-line tool usage to help you apply the knowledge in real-world scenarios.

After all, take a look for yourself at the included samples. I’ve selected a few points from each chapter so you can see firsthand whether this kind of document or checklist could be useful in your own work.
